Great stuff. This is certainly an interesting dilemma. The only solution I can think of is to feign mild insanity.

It is however, a delicate balance. On the one hand, you have to be strange enough to dissuade sales people from bothering you, but you also have to display an acceptable amount of social grace to be allowed to remain in the store for what may be a considerable period of time, depending on the prevailing meteorological conditions.

I recommend staking out an unobtrusive corner of the store where you are not hindering the conduction of business, and remaining quiet.

But if you are approached in any fashion, answer politely but LOUDLY, and then laugh, regardless of what is being discussed, and only stop when you see the first involuntary look of concern cross your assailant's face.

You can then enjoy the added entertainment of the other people in the store bearing the brunt of the sales attention, as everybody tries to pretend that you are not there.
